The Four Realms

Folklore is defined by dynamism due to its methods of transmission, which makes it a powerful tool in the development of social patterns.

This value comes at a cost: something so inclusive and unifying is particularly vulnerable in the hands of uninformed users.

Hence, any attempt to reinterpret folklore in a contemporary context must acknowledge its historical origins.

I translated this research into practice through six festival installations that transform folkloric motifs into tangible, intriguing objects.

The Four Realms festival is divided into zones, each corresponding to one of the four seasons. The stories behind the surrealist objects refer to several Romanian traditions such as: the goat dance (“Capra”), the Midsummer (“Sanziene”) or the March Amulet (“Martisor”).

While some installations are static pieces, displaying modernised folk patterns, others are interactive, allowing allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the tradition.

The project adapts folklore for modern times through an engaging festival that acts as both a romantic manifesto and a brand experience for younger audiences.
